OneLake Shortcut
Definition
A OneLake shortcut is an independent Fabric storage object that points to a target path in another OneLake item or in an external store. It makes the target appear in the consuming item without ingesting a second copy. The shortcut itself is not the data: removing it leaves the target in place, while moving or deleting the target can break the link. 1 3
Where it sits in Fabric
Shortcuts are part of OneLake’s data-unification layer and can be created in Fabric lakehouses and KQL databases. In a lakehouse, place structured, Delta-backed shortcuts at the top level of Tables so Fabric can recognize them as tables for Spark and the SQL analytics endpoint. Use Files for raw or semi-structured data; shortcuts there can sit at any folder level and are not automatically registered as tables. 1 2
This is also the handoff to BI. Direct Lake on OneLake can use Fabric data whose OneLake storage resolves to valid Delta tables, including tables reached through shortcuts. Direct Lake remains the semantic-model storage mode; the shortcut remains the data path that avoids a copy. 4
When to use it
Use a shortcut when data already belongs to another lakehouse, workspace, warehouse, or supported cloud store and consumers need current access without a recurring ingestion copy. It is useful for composing a governed view across domains or for exposing external data for exploration. Prefer a copy when substantial transformation is required, policy requires the data to reside in a particular region, or the team needs full control over local table maintenance. 2
Practical example
A sales team owns curated Delta files in an ADLS Gen2 location. A reporting lakehouse creates a shortcut under Tables to that dataset. Fabric can surface the Delta-backed target as a table, and a Power BI semantic model can be evaluated with Direct Lake on OneLake over the resulting Fabric path. The data remains in its source location while the reporting team avoids a duplicate landing pipeline. 1 2 4
Production caution
Treat a shortcut as a live dependency, not a backup or ownership boundary. Confirm that target paths will not be renamed or deleted, and review permissions before release. Internal shortcuts can pass the caller’s identity through to the target, whereas external shortcuts use delegated cloud-connection credentials; the effective access is constrained by the relevant shortcut and target permissions. Also restrict write access: deleting files through a shortcut can delete source files when the caller can write to the target. 1 5
Workshop connections
In Module 2, use the shortcut to connect OneLake’s shared foundation with the Lakehouse Tables and Files structure. In Module 3, validate the Delta-table path, access model, and Direct Lake consumption pattern before treating the shortcut as a production data product.
