Discover and Connect to Data in OneLake
This guided lab follows the path from finding a data asset to using it. Participants explore the OneLake catalog, inspect a Delta table and its schema, create a shortcut across workspaces, query the data with SQL and explore a lightweight semantic model.
What the lab covers
- Discovering Fabric data items through the OneLake catalog.
- Inspecting a Delta table, schema and underlying files.
- Creating a OneLake shortcut without copying the source data.
- Querying the connected table through the SQL analytics endpoint.
- Creating a semantic model for business-friendly exploration.
- Optionally using Copilot to draft a SQL query when the environment allows it.
Learning outcome
By the end of the lab, participants can explain the difference between discovering, copying and referencing data in OneLake. They can also connect a technical data asset to SQL and semantic exploration while keeping permissions and source ownership visible.
Workshop connection
This lab supports Module 02 — Fabric Lakehouse Approach and extends the first exercise from “create a Lakehouse” to “work across a data estate.” It creates a useful bridge into production conversations about shortcuts, ownership, access paths and semantic serving.
