Monitor a Data Warehouse in Microsoft Fabric
This lab gives warehouse administrators a concise operational view of what is happening now and what has happened recently. Participants work in an isolated training Warehouse and distinguish the lifecycle of a connection, an authenticated session and an active request before looking at longer-term query patterns.
What the lab covers
- Provisioning a dedicated workspace and sample Fabric Warehouse for monitoring practice.
- Inspecting live connection, session and request activity through dynamic management views.
- Observing a deliberately short-lived training workload and comparing its elapsed time while it runs.
- Cancelling the test workload promptly and confirming that active monitoring reflects the change.
- Reviewing historical execution records, frequently run queries and long-running query patterns through Query Insights.
Learning outcome
Participants can explain the difference between real-time operational visibility and historical performance analysis. They can identify the questions that live DMVs answer, describe how Query Insights supports recurring workload investigation, and recognise why elapsed time alone is not a complete measure of query efficiency.
Workshop connection
This overview supports Module 10 — Administration & Governance. It connects production operations to practical evidence: current activity, historical query behaviour and the permissions needed to investigate a Warehouse responsibly.
Access note
Use a dedicated training workspace and sample Warehouse only. The full lab includes a deliberately continuous query solely to make a running request observable; it must be run briefly, cancelled promptly and never used in a shared or production environment. Detailed instructions, SQL, screenshots and working materials are provided during the workshop; this public page does not publish them.
